Ruggiero Leoncavallo was certenly one of the most prestigious composers of the nineteenth century ltalian Verismo, and his works were interpreted by the most famous conductors and the most charming voices of the twentieth century.
Author of valuable works, as well as several Operettas and Romanzas, he obteined his artistic consecration from "Pagliacci", an exciting melodramatic work, deeply full of the high musical knowledge of the composer. Montalto Uffugo, an attractive town in the land of Cosenza, inspired its story.
In fact, it was in the centrai square ofthis charming Calabria's village, that occurred the historical crime which Leoncavallo personally saw taking piace and which inspired his most famous work.
The city of Montalto Uffugo, honoured of the strong relation between the piace of the history and the musical inspiration, is commemorating Leoncavallo's fame for twenty years with an lnternational Festival dedicated to him.
After having hosted on its stage world-famous artists, the Leoncavallo lnternational Festival today proposes a more interesting and exciting challenge, discovering the unpublished and unknown works of the Neapolitan composer. At the beginning of the third millennium, in which classica! music has almost exhausted its instrumental possibilities and its repertoire, the ambition of rediscovering the unpublished becomes very precious for all melodrama estimators and passionates about this genre.
In this perspective the discographic project takes piace: il contains Ruggiero Leoncavallo's Opera arias and instrumental pieces, which have never been recorded. Moreover, the project acquires an intrinsic value thanks lo the participation of world-famous musicians and singers such as the Lithuanian Kristian Benedikt, as well as the participation of young emerging Calabrian talents, the real cultura! patrimony of this territory.
Beyond the aesthetic disquisitions, this project as well as the Montalto Uffugo lnternational Festival itself, therefore, desire lo contribute to the cultura! redemption of the indifferent image of the region of Calabria, considered not very up lo the challenge. lnstitutions strongly and vividly want lo invest in large-scale cultura! projects, believing thai art and music are vehicle of concrete opportunity for young talents in Calabria, a often tormented land, but always satisfied and rich in art.
Orchestra Filarmonica della Calabria
It was born in 2011 as a resident orchestra of the Festival del Mediterraneo ; it has to its credit an intense concert activity that has seen it as the protagonist in several Italian theaters such as the Teatro Tendastrisce in Rome, the municipal theater of Altamura, the Politeama theater of Catanzaro. It has participated in numerous national festivals including the Festival delle Orchestre di Roma, the Festival "Leoncavallo" in Montalto Uffugo and the Festival Euro Mediterraneo in Altomonte. It is the resident orchestra of the opera season of the “Anfiteatro dei Ruderi di Cirella” since 2017. The orchestra was the protagonist of a tour in China at the Tianjin Opera House and the Harbin Opera House with the production of "Le Nozze di Figaro", "Pagliacci", "Cavalleria Rusticana", "Turandot", "Carmina Burana" and the New Year’s Concert with the voice of José Carreras. It boasts prestigious collaborations with many world-class musicians such as Michel Camilo, Ramin Bahrami, Sergej Krylov, Ilya Grubert, Sergei Nakariakov, Yuri Shiskin. The Principal Conductor is Filippo Arlia, awarded with the Gold Medal in the Aula Magna of the "La Sapienza" University of Rome "for the highly prized technique shown in the conducting of the orchestra and for the distinguished interpretation of the great symphonic repertoire of the '900".
