The album

The Cd “Scherzando con i corni della Scala” presented here is a project that was born approximately four years ago after the great public consensus for the execution of the Scherzo from the Symphony n. 2 by Charles Gounod. It was interesting to create a path using just the “Scherzi”. So, we have selected famuos “Scherzi” such as Beethoven’s Symphony n. 9 or Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony n. 9 and the least known pieces like Gounod’s Symphony n. 2 or Anton Bruckner’s Symphony n. 7. To mark the historical significance, the Cd begins with the Minuetto from Schubert’s Symphony the Minuetto changes in Scherzo). The last three pieces take leave from the symphonic context and indicate how this musical form has evolved over time to become, in some cases, an autonomous composition. These three last compositions are the Scherzo for orchestra in D minor of Sergej Rachmaninov, Scherzo and Fugue from string quartet of Giuseppe Verdi (this transcript highlights the horn’s virtuosity and versatility) and a Scherzo composed by the director of the group Angelo Sormani, performed for the first time in October 2015 at Teatro alla Scala. This piece, matured in the dynamic environment involving these great and virtuous professionals, tries to point out the technical ability and expression that transpire into all of their phrases, alternating rhythmic moments with great melodies. Consensus and public interest for this ensemble highlight how the instrumental proposal and its programs can become a small challenge on a new ground that shows one of the most beautiful sides of music - which can be done in so many ways. The Scala’s horns are ready.

I Corni della Scala

The ensemble is formed by the horn section of Il Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where they debuted in 2008. Since then the ensemble has had an intense concert activity performing a vast repertoire ranging from classical to film music, from pop to South American rhythms. It’s the first ensemble of that kind in Italy which aims to make the general public know the beauty of tone and expressive versatility' of this instrument, the sound of which was defined by the Romantic composer Robert Schumann "the heart of the orchestra ".
